Finding your motivation as an artist.
I wanted to share something with you. It´s about motivation and how to find it. Yesterday I had the most rewarding experience as a teacher. I gave my first Fashion Photography Workshop at Atlantic University College in Puerto Rico. This is where I did my MA in Digital Graphic Design and where I worked for 2 1/2 years as an Assistant to the Executive VP and as an Adjunct Professor. It was a great experience and I fell in love with teaching since day 1. So you can image how special this place is to me.
During the Q&A session, a student came up to me and asked me about how do I stay motivated. He caught me by surprise! I was not expecting this type of question. Then I thought to myself of the moments that were hardest on me over the past two years. My answer to him was to never give up your dreams no matter how hard it may seem to reach them. I´m sharing this with you, and although at the time it felt somewhat embarrassing, the experience did give me something to think and learn from.
As you could imagine, living in San Francisco is not cheap. It´s an amazing place to live simply that it´s very expensive and last year, because I didn´t have that much money for rent, I had to sell my camera. Yes. A photographer without a camera. How fun is that? It was embarrassing and frustrating. Thankfully I was able to use a camera thanks to a really good friend of mine who lend me his camera several times without even charging me any money, even when I offered to pay for it as a “rental”. Eventually I was able to afford a used camera and was really happy with it. Now I own a newer camera and more equipment that I can put to use for my projects.
This experience taught me that there´s always another day, and that when one door closes, another one is being opened just for you. No matter what happens. My motivation is the drive I have to accomplish my dreams. I do whatever I need to do to focus, to be inspired to be creative and to be myself through my work. It´s hard to pin point something in specific that could motivate you so my best suggestion is to search within you and think of what makes you happy, what keeps you going. It could be hearing music, drawing, exercising, eating yummy food or just sitting down at the beach or spending time with your family and friends. Let your dreams be your motivation and as Paulo Coelho says in “The Alchemist”
”When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”
I know this was a long post but I felt that i needed to share this with everyone. :)
