Thoughts on Education

I am a geek. Always have been and always will be. Undoubtedly, I like to learn.  At all times, I find myself trying out new things. From yummy looking recipes on Pinterest to trying new lighting techniques or photoshop techniques, or maybe learning a new language, which at this moment is Portuguese. Anyways, today I felt the need to write a post on education itself. Education is incredibly important. It opens doors to new things and opportunities. It opens doors to new people and ultimately it helps define who you are. My mother was a high school Spanish teacher for more than 30 years. She enjoyed it very much but it wasn't easy. Working with younger students, teenagers at that, is a hard task because they are in the middle of trying to figure out who they are and what they want to be. I did not have my mother as a teacher but I did get to meet many of her students and see the impact she made on them and their lives. Some of those students even became teachers because of her. Others will find her on Facebook and tell her that they still remember her class back in the 80's. Clearly she did make an impact on them and it was all possible through education.

On my end, education has been my gateway to getting to know people from other countries, learn about their culture, traveling to different countries and create lifelong friendships.

As I was talking to my mother earlier today (about education) I realized that I've been teaching for 6 years now (between teaching at a university and giving private workshops) and it still feels like yesterday! I also realize that I have a huge responsibility on my hands because I am sharing these experiences and my knowledge with different people of different ages and different personal and cultural backgrounds. However, regardless of that, of the resources available to teach, I find myself in a wonderful position because, although the responsibility is huge, I am able to teach something that I am truly passionate about. Teaching photography is so much fun because I love guiding my students step-by-step and helping them through the process and ultimately seeing that I GOT IT! expression on their faces.

I guess my point in all of this is, no matter what you do, try to learn something new as often as you can. It not only gives you something new to do, but it also can open the door to something to talk about.

So get out there and keep learnin'!
