The "Why" behind being a Portrait Photographer

Many of you may not know that September is Alzheimer´s awareness month. With the purpose of raising awareness and helping find a cure to this rather horrible disease, the Alzheimer´s Association organized several events across the country to raise funds for this cause. Alzheimer´s hits very close to my heart, as my grandmother passed away 2 years ago this month. She had Alzheimer´s. When she passed, I was living in San Francisco at the time, but was visiting my family back home in Puerto Rico. Two weeks before flying back to California, I sat down and talked to my grandmother about life and expectations, and hoping that I was the granddaughter she had hoped for me to be. She did not respond back as she was no longer able to communicate verbally. I just hold her soft hands, and that was more than enough for me.

It was then and there that I realized why I became a photographer. For how rather cliché it may sound, it literally is to preserve memories. People come and go in our life´s as it is part of life´s process. Some people are our family and others are friends that turn out to be just like family. We grow, we learn, we fall, we get up, we laugh and play and live our lives and in the end we move on to a better place... All in all, life is but a collection of moments. As a photographer, all I want to do is freeze those moments that only last a fraction of a second, yet in our hearts those moments could very well last a lifetime.

Photography isn´t just about pressing the shutter. It´s about connecting with people. Cherish the people you have with you and those that will come, and enjoy every bit of this thing called LIFE! :)

Here are some photos from the "Walk to End Alzheimers" in Durham, NC. It was a beautiful day and I very happy I was able to participate and donate for such a good cause. Also, what better way to do this then with my walking parter and roomie, Padmé (5.7lb Chihuahua). You can just image that she had more than just 15 seconds of fame!

If you want to donate to the Alzheimer´s Association or join one of their "walks" here´s a link where you can find events near you.

And if you like to walk or run, you can also download Charity Miles App and donate to this or many other charities.
